Data and sources
Last updated 2026-10-09
Navigation Atlas combines open data from navigation authorities, government agencies and the OpenStreetMap community. Each figure on the map names its source and the date we read it. The publications of the competent authority always prevail: see the navigation disclaimer. No source listed here endorses Navigation Atlas.
Waterways, locks, bridges and ports (Europe)
EuRIS, European River Information Services (eurisportal.eu). API/Service Fairway_v2, Locks_v2, Bridges and Ports_v1 incorporated from EuRIS (eurisportal.eu)
. For France the underlying data is published by Voies navigables de France (VNF). Used under the EuRIS developer terms: free of charge, attribution required.
Netherlands: bridges, locks, marinas and operating hours
Rijkswaterstaat, Vaarweginformatie (FIS) (vaarweginformatie.nl), dataservice: bridges with every opening (closed and open clearance, width, fixed or movable), locks with their chambers (length, width, sill depth), maximum permitted dimensions, fairway depth, recreational waterway classes, tourist harbours (berths, visitor berths, fuel), bunker stations and operating hours. No use restrictions per the Rijkswaterstaat data register (CC0 1.0). Where FIS and EuRIS describe the same object we join them by ISRS code (else by place and name) and name both sources on the figure.
Water levels (France)
Hub'Eau, eaufrance (hubeau.eaufrance.fr): gauge stations and live readings, under the Licence Ouverte / Open Licence 2.0 (Etalab). Station list copied on the date shown on the map; readings fetched live when you open a gauge.
Boating facilities and map data
© OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. Marinas, harbours, fuel stations, boatyards and rescue stations come from the France extract by Geofabrik. The facilities layer we derive from it is published under the ODbL 1.0 at data/poi.geojson.
Background map: OpenFreeMap, © OpenMapTiles, data from OpenStreetMap.
Terrain: Terrain Tiles on AWS (Mapzen / Tilezen), built from sources including SRTM (NASA), GMTED2010 (USGS), ETOPO1 (NOAA) and EU-DEM, produced using Copernicus data and information funded by the European Union.
